Raised lead is a traditional type of lettering and can only be done by hand. The process is very time consuming and done in a number of stages. First the inscription is hand drawn on the stone, every letter is then drilled with around 5 - 6 holes. Lead is then beaten into the holes and left proud of the stone surface. A hammer and chisel is then used to shape the letters. The final stage is to paint the surface of the letters with black enamel paint
